With the “Milleproroghe Decree” published today, March 3, 2026, in the Official Gazette, the deadline for parents who are Italian citizens by birth to declare their intention to acquire Italian citizenship for their minor children has been extended to May 31, 2029.
In particular, this rule applies to minors:
who are children of parents who are Italian citizens by birth (i.e., because they were born in Italy);
where the declaration is submitted within three years of the child’s birth or from the subsequent date on which parentage, including adoption, by an Italian citizen is established.
This declaration must be submitted to the Consulate abroad, after booking the service via FastIT https://serviziconsolari.esteri.it/home or at any municipality in Italy.
