Starting January 1, 2026, specific changes have been made to the procedures for acquiring Italian citizenship by children born abroad to parents who are citizens by birth but do not automatically pass on Italian citizenship.

In particular, the changes introduced stipulate that, as of January 1, 2026:

– declarations made by parents may be submitted within three years (and no longer within one year as previously required) of the child’s birth or the subsequent date on which filiation, including adoption, by an Italian citizen is established;

– declarations will no longer be subject to the payment of a €250 fee to the Ministry of the Interior.

On the contrary, declarations to be made by May 31, 2026, according to the previous legislation, must continue to be accompanied by the receipt of payment of the €250 fee to the Ministry of the Interior, and no refund of payments already made may be requested.
