A young couple gets married and after only two months breaks off the conjugal relationship.

Upon the husband’s request, the Sacred Rota (ecclesiastic Court of Vatican City) pronounced the annulment of the marriage in the light of the extreme shortness of the conjugal relationship.

Requested recognition of the ecclesiastical decision in Italy, the Court of Appeal of Rome ruled in favour, ordering the civil registrar to register the annulment on the marriage certificate.

This has made separation and subsequent divorce proceedings provided for by Italian law useless.
